Artist’s Manifesto.

The "Gangs Of London" series explores the artist’s personal experiences of youth movements and gang culture from the 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s in London and south-east England. The series also draws upon stories passed down from previous generations of Teds, Mods, Skinheads and Punks as well ethnic groups such as Gypsies, criminal gangs and football firms. The paintings show the vibrant culture and fashion of these movements as well as exploring the psychology, violence and rituals associated with belonging to a gang.

Late 20th century gangs and youth movements have attained an almost mythical status in the present era. The series suggests that there is a heritage drawn from the warlike tribal nature of ancient Britain which was passed down through the generations and manifested in modern youth. This yearning for ritual and belonging in a society which many felt alienated from lead to the establishment of a diverse range of gangs, each with their own proud identity.

The clothing, music and codes of behaviour displayed by these modern gangs were a way of rebelling against the authoritarian establishments who sought to subdue and control youth energy, often seen as being at odds with the values of traditional society. The absence of ritual which handled the transition from child to adulthood led to youths creating their own traditions, each a product of the energy and socio-economic conditions of the era. These are first hand experiences and stories illustrated in the series.
